NEW DENTURES

Wearing new dentures is a learned process not an instinct with which we are born. We will give you a few handy hints that will help you understand what dentures are and how to adapt to them.

Fitting your new denture

You’ll need to persevere and be patient with your new denture in order to get used to them. It is important to leave your new denture in your mouth as long as you can for the first few days and not take it out for any reason other than it is causing pain or soreness, or that requires cleaning. The first 48 hours are generally most challenging and frequently determine your success with your new denture.

Suction with your new denture

Suction may take from 1 hour to 24 hours depending upon the amount of soft tissue. Your upper denture may take longer than a lower one. It can be very helpful to drink more water through a straw, to maintain the moisture levels in your mouth and remove excess saliva.

Read Out Loud

New dentures may affect your speech, but is also one of the easiest problems to resolve. Simply reading out loud, or singing if you enjoy, will allow your tongue to find the correct position enunciating your speech. Slow down as you talk or sing if you find any speech impediment.

Cleaning your new denture

Only remove your denture for cleaning, which must be done properly at least twice a day and when going to bed. At night, soak the dentures in a glass of water or denture bath and leave them by the side of your bed.

Denture Adhesives

No denture is expected to match the perfection of healthy natural teeth. One way to enhance retention and stability is to use denture adhesives.
